KwaZulu -Natal College of Nursing

The KZNCN is a public nursing college that is accredited by the South African Nursing Council and administered under the Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal. The KZNCN is a single nursing college instituted by eleven Campuses and twelve Sub-Campuses vastly located across the various districts within the province.

KZNCN programs address the needs of KZN province with a focus on professional, legal and ethical foundations of nursing. Students are guided by passionate academic staff to become competent nurse practitioners with scientific background.

Our programs are comprised of theoretical and clinical component and students are placed in clinical facilities across KZN province for clinical learning experiences as directed by the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

Basic Programmes

Diploma in Nursing (General, Psychiatry and Community) and Midwifery: R425

Duration of the programme is 4 years. The Diploma in Nursing (General, Psychiatry and Community) and Midwifery is a full time structured program offered over the duration of 4 years. It follows a block system for theory and work integrated learning for integration of theory and practice according to prescripts of the South African Nursing Council.

Diploma in Midwifery: R254

The Diploma in Midwifery is a full time structured program with prescribed modules offered over the duration of 1 year. It follows a block system for theory and work integrated learning for integration of theory and practice according to prescripts of the South African Nursing Council.

Diploma in General Nursing (R683)

The Diploma in General is a full time structured program offered over the duration of 2 years. It follows a block system for theory and work integrated learning for integration of theory and practice according to prescripts of the South African Nursing Council.

Diploma in Psychiatry (R880) and Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (R48)

The Diploma in Psychiatry is a full time structured program offered over the duration of 1 year. it follows a block system for theory and work integrated learning for integration of theory and practice according to prescripts of the South African Nursing Council.

Post Basic Programmes

The post basic programmes are full time structured programmes offered over the duration of 1 year with decentralised clinical placement for some programmes. The post graduate programme follows a block system for theory and work integrated learning for integration of theory and practice according to prescripts of the South African Nursing Council.

The clinical field of specialization are:

  • Child Nursing Science
  • Critical Care
  • Emergency Nursing
  • Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science
  • Operating Theatre
  • Ophthalmology Nursing Science
  • Orthopaedic Nursing Science
  • English: Minimum symbol “E” Higher grade or “D” Standard Grade • Biology or any other Natural Science subject “E” Higher Grade or “D” Standard Grade

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS – FROM 2008

  • National Senior Certificate: Degree/Diploma • Minimum: 25 points • English L4
  • Additional Language • Life Orientation L4 • Maths L3 /Maths Literacy L4
  • Life Sciences/ Physical Science L3 • And any other 2 subjects from the designated list
